New fan photos from Pink Floyd’s 1981 The Wall show in Dortmund

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 06/10/2020 by Col T06/10/2020

Pink Floyd famously toured The Wall with a limited number of shows taking place from 1980 to 1981, because of the scale of the spectacle that Roger Waters had devised. Of this tour, only 1 leg took place in mainland Europe, with Dortmund in northern Germany being the lucky city chosen.

Even luckier still, was AFG reader Hugo Grimes, who happened to be in Germany at the time of the shows. He attended the show on 20th February 1981:

I had arrived in Dortmund to work for 7 months as part of my university studies.  I was very surprised/delighted to find out that Pink Floyd were playing at a huge concert hall within walking distance of my flat!

I also saw Thin Lizzy, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Jethro Tull, Blues Band, Stevie Wonder in the next few months.

Hope people enjoy them – I was sat in the front row – but my ticket said row 32 – so I only had a few exposures left on my camera – it I had known I would have bought another film!

Enjoy the photos below:

Thanks again to Hugo, and remember that if you have anything Floyd related that you think may be of interest, drop a line to sean@pinkfloydz.com OR liam@pinkfloydz.com

The aim of this inaugural award, as stated in the press release:

The award was conceived to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of an elite group of recording, mixing and mastering engineers who have strived throughout their careers to deliver the finest music experience possible. The award also underscores the growing trend towards ‘studio quality’ high resolution download and streaming services for music enthusiasts.

Guthrie joins the illustrious group featuring other well-known figures in the industry such as Bob Ludwig, George Massenberg, and Elliot Schneiner.  Recording engineer Ed Cherney, who passed away in October of last year, will also be commemorated by the campaign later this year.

As one of twelve recipients in the year-long campaign, Guthrie was recently interviewed by journalist Simon Barnett for the podcast series The Other Side of the Glass regarding his multi-decade career in audio engineering and record production.  The entry on the Legends website also includes a Tidal playlist of various artists’ recordings Guthrie has been associated with throughout his career, featuring music by Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Ambrosia, Toto, Judas Priest, and Kashmir.
