I know there’d be some readers out there growing a little impatient for me to tell some more directly Pink Floyd-related stories here. I promise I will. But Roger Waters new tour caught my eye and brought back a rather embarrassing memory.

In his typically up-beat and jovial manner Waters has titled his Live in the Round shows
THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

It reminded me of an incident which occurred when I was maintenance man at a local primary school. I was using a drill to screw new hinges on a classroom door when I saw smoke coming from the cafeteria just down the hall. The fire alarm sounded but there was no reaction from the teacher or students, as the school had already had a couple of fire drills that week.

As the smoke started filling the hallway I, with the drill whirring in my clenched hand, leapt into the classroom and yelled, “This is not a drill!” The children burst into laughter and said, “Well what IS IT then?”

It was humiliating. But I had the last laugh. I screwed the door shut and they all burned to death!*

*P.C. police please note, THIS IS JUST A JOKE!
I know people often tell me my jokes are as funny as a burning orphanage, but I wouldn’t actually burn a whole classroom of kiddies.
I’m not so sure my son Dilbert wouldn’t though. He’s an ex primary teacher!

This is not a drill?
