Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets @ Grand Rex, Paris, 22 Juin 2022

Very far from the grandiloquence of the Waters and Gilmour tours, Mason gives a rather raw version of Pink Floyd. This does not prevent him from attacking the concert with an incredible version of “One of these days” which puts the public, composed mainly of ultimate fans, in agreement. It follows back and forth between the psychedelic ballads and refrains of the Syd Barrett era such as “Vegetable man”, “Bike”, “Arnold layne”, “Lucifer sam”, “See emily play” and more instrumental pieces like “Set the control for the heart of the sun”, “Atom heart mother” or even “Saucerful of secrets”… What emerges from this performance, slightly lower than that of four years ago, is that Gilmour and Waters are not easily replaced.

In the pieces of the “barrettiene” ballad type, there is clearly a lack of subtlety and virtuosity which does not make it possible to restore the poetic and hovering lightness of the originals. In the more constructed pieces, the result is often more interesting, because by not being able to restore Gilmour’s virtuosity, the group departs from it by offering personal and more punchy versions, which are extremely successful and plunge the public into superb cosmic journeys.

The formidable version of “Echoes” will clearly be the highlight of this concert, reaching Himalayan peaks and provoking enjoyment and ecstasy within a more than conquered audience. We then say to ourselves that no one plays this type of music anymore and that it is a chance to be able to enjoy it live in 2022 with one of the historic composers, Nick Mason. And we are aware that this is probably one of the very last times that we can see this in real life, given the age and form of the gentleman.
