Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 10/03/2021 by Col T10/03/2021

Dom Beken , keyboard player with Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets has recently announced the launch of his Official Facebook page.

To celebrate the launch a video from 2012 featuring David Gilmour (Vocals & Guitar), Phil Manzanera (Vocals & Guitar), Guy Pratt (Bass Guitar) and Dom Beken on keyboards, It is unknown who is playing the drums for this private performance.

Dom posted this video with the quote “Here’s a bit of history… some of the seeds of Saucerful were very likely sown on this evening…. (sorry it’s terrible phone sound)” This is the only time David Gilmour has played Arnold Layne without Richard Wright on keyboard.

David seems to be playing his trusty 55′ Fender Esquire for the performance, One can assume from a photo surfacing online that this is where Lee Harris also of Nick’s Saucerful Of Secrets first played with David.

Bhaskar Menon Dies At 86

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 09/03/2021 by Col T09/03/2021

Bhaskar Menon, the esteemed record label boss whom Pink Floyd credited with helping make their name, has died at age 86.

Starting out with EMI in 1956 – just as the rock revolution began – he went on to rise to the rank of chairman and then onward to become the president of the parent corporation, including Capitol Records in the U.S., until he started his own business in 1995. During his years with the international conglomerate, he took a personal interest in the careers of many of its artists, including the Beatles, David Bowie, Queen, Iron Maiden and many others.

One of Menon’s most notable achievements was helping break Pink Floyd in the States. He believed in their 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon so much that he put the full force of Capitol’s marketing team behind it, placing the firm’s vice president, Al Coury, in charge of the project. Menon persuaded the single-averse band to release 7″ versions of “Us and Them” and “Time” to U.S. radio, leading to the album becoming the fourth best-selling title in history, with several thousand copies a week still retailing to this day.

“The story in America was a disaster,” Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason said in the documentary film The Making of the Dark Side of the Moon in 2003.”We really hadn’t sold records. And so they brought in a man called Bhaskar Menon, who was absolutely terrific. He decided he was going to make this work and make the American company sell it. And he did.”

Pink Floyd : Feature in March edition of Classic Rock Magazine

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 05/03/2021 by Col T05/03/2021

More often than not, when the name ‘Pink Floyd’ is mentioned, many fans immediately think of The Dark Side Of The Moon or The Wall. Or for early Floyd devotees, thoughts might turn to Syd Barrett. But what about that fertile period post-Syd and pre-Dark Side?

It’s an intriguing time for a band who were struggling to get to grips with the loss of their guiding light and principal songwriter; who threw themselves into soundtrack work to try to get a steer on where to go next; who were getting their heads around the emergence of Roger Waters as a songwriter and the ascendance of David Gilmour as a singer and player…

It was a time of flux before things went absolutely stratospheric when they released Dark Side on an unsuspecting world. And it’s this tumultuous period of Floyd that is re-vistited this month.

Copies of the new issue of Classic Rock can be purchased online from Magazines Direct and all UK in shops such as supermarkets and newsagents, although delays are possible as stores prioritise the delivery of different lines of stock.

* In North America, Classic Rock is available is branches of Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million, although new issues do not go on sale until a couple of weeks after they’re published in The UK.

Pink Floyd : Dark Side Of The Moon EMI Tape Box Folio Release

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 04/03/2021 by Col T16/11/2022
Pink Floyd 'The Dark Side of the Moon' EMI Tape Box Folio – Side One

Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon EMI Tape Box Folio – Side One is a limited edition of 250 replica prints that reveals the rarely seen The Dark Side of the Moon Quadrophonic discrete master – Side One EMI tape box, held deep within the EMI archive.

Recording of the album began in May 1972 in Studio Two at EMI Studios (as Abbey Road was known), using the iconic EMI TG12345 MK IV console. Abbey Road was to become Pink Floyd’s home for 38 days over a seven-month period, as they embarked on the creation of what, for many, would be their defining work. Our folio shows Side One of the album, which was recorded in Studios Two and Three at Abbey Road, with Alan Parsons and Peter James noted as the project’s engineers. The Dark Side of the Moon was released on March 1, 1973, and whilst it never received a UK number 1 position, it went on to become the second best-selling album of all time. This multi-layered album, with its light and shade and a genre impossible to define, quickly found its way to becoming the authentic, complex and deeply personal album known to fans around the world.

The tape contained within this box was exclusively manufactured by EMI. Between the mid ‘50s and 1981, EMI produced both blank and pre-recorded magnetic tapes in many formats, including type H60 and type H65. In the late ‘60s, EMI redesigned both the EMITAPE boxes and reels. The new boxes were aqua blue with an ‘atomic’ image made up of three superimposed images of tape reels, which is the cover you see in this folio. Many of these tape boxes, including The Dark Side of the Moon, are now stored at the EMI Archives, in Hayes, London. The Archives hold artefacts including rare and unheard recordings from the first years of the recorded music industry, along with photographs, letters, diaries, sales catalogues and EMI company records.

With a release date of March 5th,This is an exclusive collaboration between Pink Floyd and Abbey Road Studios. Each handmade folio is numbered and includes a 500gsm box card black folder (37cm x 37cm with a 5cm lip) which encases the two replica litho prints (30cm x 30cm), recreated in exact life size dimensions and cradled with transparent corner holders. Alongside this, it includes a leaflet looking back at the recording of The Dark Side of the Moon and a certificate of authenticity.

Pre-orders are available from The Abbey Road Store by Clicking Here
