Syd Barrett at 80: Ian Barrett on Celebrating His Uncle’s Legacy
This year marks what would have been Syd Barrett’s 80th birthday, with his life and legacy being honoured from October 3 through October 11, 2026, through a major exhibition, an all-star tribute album and a special concert in Cambridge. Proceeds from the celebrations will go to mental health charities.
The exhibition at Openspace will explore Barrett’s life, art and cultural impact through original paintings and sketches, work from guest artists, and a talk from leading biographer Rob Chapman. On October 10, the Cambridge Corn Exchange will host a special concert featuring Kula Shaker, Soft Machine, Men on the Border, Diana Silveira & The Psychedelic Circus, Radhika and Pünk Floyd, alongside an immersive liquid light show by Los Angeles artist The Mad Alchemist.
The commemorative album, Clowns And Jugglers: The Songs Of Syd Barrett, released today, features new recordings, previously unreleased material and live performances from artists including Kula Shaker, Martha Wainwright, Mystery Jets, Rosalie Cunningham, David Gilmour and Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets.
These celebrations would not have been possible without the full support of Syd’s family. We’re very fortunate to have Syd’s nephew, Ian Barrett, with us to talk about the celebrations, what they mean to the family, and Syd’s enduring legacy.
AFG: Ian, as we mark what would have been Syd Barrett’s 80th birthday, and 20 years since his death, has your view of your uncle changed over the years? And while putting all of these celebrations together, have you discovered or learned anything new about Syd?
IB: I think the main thing with this event is how the focus is shifting more and more to his work as an artist as well as his music. Years ago I think the art side was thought of as a hobby, but with us organizing a full art exhibition alongside the concert it has certainly put his art firmly back in the spotlight. We will never know, but I think this is something that would really have pleased Syd.
I wouldn’t say my view of Syd has changed dramatically, but what has changed is the way his artistic legacy is being appreciated.
AFG: Was there a particular moment when the idea for an 80th anniversary celebration began to take shape?
IB: There is a specific moment when the idea emerged. My cousin Mark Barrett saw a painting of Syd by Mark Wilkinson, who has created record covers for Marillion, Iron Maiden and many others, at a music festival. While the two Marks chatted, the idea for something to celebrate what would have been Syd’s 80th birthday emerged. And over a year down the road, we have a concert, art exhibition and vinyl and CD album release!
AFG: Turning to the album, which is released today, how did Clowns And Jugglers come together?
IB: The album came together in tandem with the concert and art show. Curated mainly by Mark Wilkinson and myself, along with Rob Ayling from the record label behind the album.
AFG: With so many artists contributing, how did you decide which songs would be represented on the album?
IB: One thing we were agreed and adamant about is that we wanted a good variety of musical styles on the album and also a mix of male and female voices. This worked out well and we have also got a super mix of young and old acts. The wonderful young singer Radhika from Glasgow is a good example. She was recommended for the project and her version of Matilda Mother is amazing.
AFG: Syd’s influence continues to reach musicians who weren’t even born when he was making records. What do you think makes his songwriting remain so relevant?
IB: It’s hard to pin it down, but I think one aspect that has given him such longevity is that his music sounds so UNIQUE. No one could ever say that his style is less than his own, and this means it remains special all down the years.
It seems to be picked up and loved by new fans and this brings him back into the spotlight. Even in his absence, he is still with us and at the drop of a needle or a click on Spotify.
AFG: Let’s shift focus to the tribute concert, which is tomorrow night! Why was the Cambridge Corn Exchange the chosen venue? Given its connection to Syd’s final performance, has that history influenced how you’ve put the show together?
IB: As with the 2016 celebration, it is just the obvious choice. It has the links with Cambridge and also being the venue of his last-ever concert.
AFG: In recent years, Syd’s YouTube channel has featured some amazing animations from Artist on the Border set to his music. Will we see more of that visual style incorporated into the concert?
IB: OH YES! Alex is an integral part of the concert and is bringing his creative magic to the show. He has an arsenal of visual treats and will be bringing some of his Syd-fired imagination to the concert.
AFG: Are you able to give us any hints about who the special guests at the concert might be?
IB: They wouldn’t be surprise guests if I told you, would they? Winks
AFG: Fair enough. Looking back on Syd’s life and legacy, what does marking his 80th birthday mean to you and your family?
IB: I guess it means the same thing as EVERY year. It continues to amaze and please us that people are still enjoying his music and art. It has been 20 years since he died, let alone when he last played music and it’s lovely that his creativity is still being enjoyed.
AFG: What do you think Syd himself would have made of all these celebrations?
IB: I couldn’t really answer that. But maybe secretly he would be thrilled. Especially if he knew that his art was being enjoyed literally a few hundred yards away from his last home. Surely he would raise a smile at that.
AFG: Ian, what’s the one thing you hope people take away from Syd’s 80th? Is there something you’d like people to come away with a better understanding or appreciation of?
IB: I think it’s important for his short career to be seen as more than just the sum of its parts. YES, it was short. YES, there is not a huge amount of music. But the fact that this small body of work still has such an impact on fans and other musicians is just amazing.
AFG: Thank you very much for your time, Ian.
