New Pink Floyd 1977 German Newsreel Footage Surfaces
Recently, the Pink Floyd Research Group uncovered previously unseen German newsreel footage from Pink Floyd’s 1977 show at the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin, filmed on January 29. This was the band’s fifth show on the 1977 tour — the tour famously promoting the release of Animals, during which they performed both Animals and Wish You Were Here in their entirety, along with a few well-known encores.
The upgraded 16mm footage comes courtesy of a well-known Floyd archivist who goes by the name “Neonknight.” Although the clip is very short (just after 4 mins in total), it’s quite remarkable. It features pre-show audience shots, segments of “Sheep” and “Dogs,” and even a glimpse of the inflatable pig during “Pigs (Three Different Ones).” It offers a fleeting glimpse (pun intended) into what was, at the time, Pink Floyd’s most ambitious endeavor — a fusion of rock and roll with theatrical spectacle.
