Have You Got It Yet? Syd Barrett Film Now Playing In Theaters

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 02/08/2023 by Tony R02/08/2023

Just a reminder that the Syd Barrett film Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd is now playing across US cinemas!
The theatrical window has now been extended to October and November and new dates are regularly announced. As always, keep checking the website to see if its playing in your area and do go and see the film! It is a brilliant and beautiful love letter to Syd. Fans will adore it!

Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd (US Trailer)

Cult icon, enigma, recluse… the life of Syd Barrett, founding member of Pink Floyd, is full of unanswered questions. Until now. Piecing together his comet-like rise to pop stardom, his creative and destructive impulses, breakdown, exit from the band and subsequent life alone, this feature length documentary is set against the social context of the explosive sixties. Directed by Storm Thorgerson (Hipgnosis) and award-winning director Roddy Bogawa, it features new interviews with Syd’s friends, lovers, family and band mates Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason.

Syd Barrett, founding member of world famous rock group Pink Floyd and its initial songwriter and leader, led a life full of unanswered questions. Was he a drug casualty of the sixties? Did he walk away from the pressures of the commercial music world? Did he suffer from an undiagnosed mental illness?

Pink Floyd were caught in the epicentre of the ‘underground’ explosion of the 60s as the psychedelic house band of the UFO club in London, with Syd Barrett its enigmatic figurehead, inspiring such musicians as David Bowie and Marc Bolan. Though he named the group, wrote the first two hit songs and was the lead vocalist and guitarist, Barrett was pushed out of the band by its members who were convinced he was having an LSD induced psychotic breakdown.

After leaving Pink Floyd, Barrett struggled to record two solo records but eventually dropped out of the music industry completely, living as a recluse for thirty years – while Pink Floyd went on to worldwide fame as one of the biggest selling bands of all time. Many Pink Floyd works examined themes of genius and madness.

The film includes iconic screen footage for Shine On You Crazy Diamond, rarely seen excerpts of Syd backstage, never-before seen photographs and a soundtrack full of Floyd’s music, Have You Got It Yet? will thrill fans and newcomers to Syd’s legend alike.

Roger Waters Exclusive Interview For Red Line TV

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 02/08/2023 by Tony R02/08/2023

Roger Waters appears in an exclusive interview with Red Line TV:

“We’re really excited to announce our latest video featuring exclusive access to Roger Waters, legendary co-founder of the band Pink Floyd, and tireless campaigner for the rights of the Palestinian people.

In this no-holds-barred interview, Roger speaks candidly about facing allegations of antisemitism, his legal fight to reinstate cancelled tour dates in Germany, and why he will never be silenced in his defence of human rights. There’s also a sneak preview of his latest recording: a reworking of the all-time classic album Dark Side of the Moon.

Running the gamut from emotionally moving to vitriolic, this is definitely a must see.”

Happy 80th Birthday Richard Wright/Wet Dream Remix Releases

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 29/07/2023 by Tony R31/07/2023

Richard Wright - Wet Dream (2023 Remix/Remaster) | Rhino

Today we celebrate the beloved Richard Wright on what would of been his 80th birthday! To mark the occasion a remix of Richard’s debut solo album Wet Dream has been released on CD (in some areas) and available on all streaming services!

Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Aubrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet.

September 29th sees the release of a blue transparent vinyl and a bluray edition featuring a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and a Dolby Atmos mix! Included are exclusive personal images and videos from around this period of his life. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. The Blu-ray has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. Order your copy at the links below.

In other Rick news, from our sister site Brain-Damage:

Yesterday evening, at the Dolby Listening Room in Soho, London, family (most of Richard’s were there), friends, and selected media were treated to a pair of playback sessions – in the pitch black – which straddled a Q&A session with Steven Wilson, hosted by Guy Pratt. First, the playback: this was the Atmos mix which is coming in September on the Blu-ray of the album, and simply put, it sounded absolutely superb. The clarity, power, and sheer musical and emotional impact made for a truly memorable night. The Q&A with Steven led to some fascinating insights into the process of finding the original master tapes (which were held at Universal in London), then getting them “baked” by Damon Iddins at Astoria (David Gilmour’s houseboat studio), before Steven could take the separate 24-track recordings and create the remix, which gives us an album which has never sounded as good as this!

Here’s a glimpse at the Q&A, and the message to the attendees on a screen in the Ray Dolby Lounge (a separate screen was showing home video footage of Richard, which should be on the Blu-ray when that is released).

Nick Mason To Be Made Honorary Citizen Of Pompeii

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 24/07/2023 by Tony R25/07/2023

Nick Mason - WikipediaExciting news for our favorite drummer Nick Mason! He is to be made an honorary citizen of Pompeii tomorrow 24th July, 2023. The same day his Saucerful Of Secrets are to take the stage at the Teatro Grande! 52 years after he played Pompeii with Pink Floyd and filmed their highly acclaimed concert film ‘Live at Pompeii.’ Our most heartfelt congratulations go out to Nick!

An an Italian news resource goes on to say (Article has been translated to English):

The legendary Pink Floyd drummer, the only member of the band to have played on all their studio albums, returns to the excavations of Pompeii in concert on July 24 in the Teatro Grande, 52 years after the historic live behind closed doors, filmed and immortalized by the cameras of Adrian Maben, with his ‘Saucerful Of Secrets’, produced by D’Alessandro e Galli.

Unanimously approved the honorary citizenship of Pompeii as well as to Nick Mason, the ceremony presided over by the mayor Carmine Lo Sapio, will be held at the Municipality in the council hall on the same day of the concert.

Accompanying Nick Mason on stage will be a superband he founded in 2018: Guy Pratt on bass (with Pink Floyd since 1987), Gary Kemp vocals and guitar (founding member of Spandau Ballet), Lee Harris (Blockheads) on solo guitar and Dom Beken (The Orb) on keyboards. The show will focus on the first albums of Pink Floyd’s career pre ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. A return to the dawn that will stage the superband, to the years when Syd Barrett “crazy diamond” was the author of the lyrics and the soul of what would later become one of the largest and most influential groups in history. Mason stated that they are not a tribute band, but that they want to ‘capture the spirit of the time and transmit it to the public’ through tracks extracted from records such as ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ (1967), ‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’ (1968), ‘Ummagumma’ (1969) and ‘Meddle’ (1971).

Ian Emes 1949-2023

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 22/07/2023 by Tony R22/07/2023

Ian Emes and Tom Odell in Conversation photoIt is with a heavy heart to say Ian Emes has passed away, below is the official statement from Pink Floyd:
British film director, animator, artist, writer and pioneer of experimental film techniques, famous for his work with Pink Floyd, has died. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Ian’s eye-catching animated film French Windows (set to Pink Floyd’s One Of These Days) from 1972 came to the attention of Richard Wright, and his unforgettable animation for other Floyd songs such as the spinning clock faces of Time, and the heartbeat of Speak To Me, were mainstays of the band’s concerts for many years. In more recent years he also created an absorbing 55 minute film for Pink Floyd’s The Endless River.

We at AFG offer our deepest sympathy to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Squaring The Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis) – Bluray & DVD Release

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 22/07/2023 by Tony R22/07/2023

August 7th sees the UK/Ireland release of ‘Squaring The Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)’ in a special Bluray/DVD collectors edition.

Celebrated photographer, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary SQUARING THE CIRCLE (the story of Hipgnosis) tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio, Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognizable album covers of all time. They formed Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the ferment of the sixties and became rock royalty during the boom time of the seventies. They conjured into existence sights that no one had previously thought possible, produced visuals which popularized music that had previously been considered fringe, and were at the white-hot centre of the maddest, funniest and most creative era in the history of popular music.

During this period, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like – Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note, but they changed music. The film features brand new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher, and many more. Order now through Amazon UK & Dogwoof

Special Features include
-Limited edition booklet
-Commentary with Anton Corbijn and Aubrey Powell
-Theatrical Trailer
-DVD & Blu-ray disc combo
-English subtitles
