Wish You Were Here – A People’s History Of Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 03/10/2023 by Tony R03/10/2023

This Day In Music Books | Wish You Were Here – A People's History of Pink Floyd

Available starting October 9th is Wish You Were – A People’s History Of Pink Floyd by Richard Houghton. You may recall we gave away a copy back in June, well now they will start shipping next week! If you haven’t ordered a copy of this 448 page limited edition hardback yet, there’s still a chance to bag one at the pre-publication price of just £27.50 (plus shipping): https://spenwoodbooks.com/product/wish-you-were-here-a-peoples-history-of-pink-floyd/

Wish You Were Here – A People’s History of Pink Floyd takes the reader on a trip back in time (without the aid of acid) to the psychedelic Sixties, when London was tuning in, turning on and dropping out and when Pink Floyd were at the heart of what was happening in the music capital of the world. With concert memories going back to the earliest Floyd shows, in 1966, through to the last appearance of the band at Live 8 in London’s Hyde Park in 2005, this is the Pink Floyd story in the words of over 500 fans, with eyewitness accounts from around the globe of seeing in concert one of the most legendary bands of all time.

It’s the story of Syd Barrett’s founding of the band and of his genius and burn out; of the move by the band from the singles charts and into recording and performing the multi-million selling albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall; of the gruelling world tours and the increasing tension between band members Roger Waters and David Gilmour that fuelled the creative genius of the band and which continues to spark to this day, nearly 20 years since the band last played live together.

More than 300 different gigs are recalled by fans who remember the music, the light show and the aural adventure of a Pink Floyd concert along with the wine, the magic mushrooms and the window pane acid.

Floyd concerts were not captured on smartphones. Concert memories were an aural and visual experience made in the mind’s eye. Now these stories, previously shared only with family and friends, are told anew.

Written and compiled by Richard Houghton, creator of the People’s History series of music books, Wish You Were Here – A People’s History of Pink Floyd is published on 20 October 2023 by Spenwood Books.

An Exclusive Interview with John Edginton

Pink Floyd - A Fleeting Glimpse Posted on 29/09/2023 by Tony R30/09/2023

Join us in our first video interview, featuring legendary filmmaker John Edginton!

John is best known to Pink Floyd fans for his documentaries, most notably 2001’s The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story which aired on BBC TWO as part of their “Omnibus” series.

John is also known for 2012’s The Story of Wish You Were Here, which also aired on the BBC. Both documentaries have seen a physical release shortly after their airing and have since become favorites amongst the Pink Floyd fan community due to the fact how well they are put together and feature the band and family members in very intimate and personal interviews. Extended interviews can be seen on John’s Youtube channel which features loads of really great material from Pink Floyd and other legendary acts.

We had the honor of speaking with John about how he came to work with the Floyd, how he persuaded Roger Waters to do the Wish You Were Here documentary and he even answers some questions from some of our forum members! Its a packed albeit very laidback interview with loads of smiles. We hope you enjoy.

USA CD | MP3 | Blu-ray | Vinyl

UK CD | MP3 | Blu-ray | Vinyl

My remix of Richard Wright’s ‘Wet Dream’ will be released on CD and streaming platforms on what would have been Richard’s 80th birthday, 28th July. Deep blue transparent marbled vinyl and blu-ray formats follow on 29th September. The blu-ray additionally includes 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes as well as never-before-seen personal archive videos. The new mix additionally includes 2 extra passages of music that were edited out of the original mix.

Most people know that Pink Floyd have always been my favourite band, so it was a real honour to be commissioned by Richard’s children Gala and Jamie Wright to remix this relatively underrated and beautiful entry in the Floyd canon. For anyone hearing the album for the first time it will become apparent just how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinctive rhythm patterns, signature keyboard sounds, vocals, jazz influences, and style of play exude throughout. All formats feature images and brand-new artwork commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie and designed by Carl Glover. The original Hipgnosis artwork features in the vinyl booklet. – Steven Wilson
